Ebook About For Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice fans everywhere, this is Mary Bennet's story . . .'Will delight Pride and Prejudice fans' - Independent'It's difficult not to race through those final pages' – Jo Baker, author of LongbournIn Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Mary is the middle of the five Bennet girls and the plainest of them all, so what hope does she have? Prim and pious, with no redeeming features, she is unloved and seemingly unlovable. The Other Bennet Sister, though, shows another side to Mary. An introvert in a family of extroverts; a constant disappointment to her mother who values beauty above all else; fearful of her father’s sharp tongue; with little in common with her siblings – is it any wonder she turns to books for both company and guidance? And, if she finds her life lonely or lacking, that she determines to try harder at the one thing she can be: right. One by one, her sisters marry – Jane and Lizzy for love; Lydia for some semblance of respectability – but Mary, it seems, is destined to remain single and live out her life at Longbourn, at least until her father dies and the house is bequeathed to the reviled Mr Collins. But when that fateful day finally comes, she slowly discovers that perhaps there is hope for her, after all.Simultaneously a wonderfully warm homage to Jane Austen and a delightful new story in its own right, Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister is, at its heart, a life-affirming tale of a young woman finding her place in the world. Witty and uplifting, it will make you feel – and cheer – for Mary as you never have before.Book The Other Bennet Sister: The Perfect Regency Novel for Fans of Bridgerton Review :
Ms. Hadlow tells the story of the the oft neglected Mary Bennet, the ignored middle sister in Pride and Prejudice and her trials and eventual triumph. Along the way we also get to visit in cameo roles, Mother Bennet (Mr. Bennet has passed on), Jane and Lizzie and their husbands, Lydia, Kitty, Charlotte and Reverend Collins (who comes across as more sympathetic here), and the genial and affectionate Gardiners who provide Mary with a home and the safety, security, and wise counsel to allow her to grow.We witness Mary’s changing living conditions, interests, and mindset. She, while staying true to herself, blooms into a woman who eventually finds love and happiness.Well-written in the style of Jane Austen. Ms. Hadlow synchronizes events in the parent novel with Mary’s view of the same events.Great first novel from this author. Will seek out more of her work as it evolves. 2.5/5Above all, the most infuriating, insulting, and disrespectful part of this book was when the author decided to take direct quotes from the book, and sometimes even some scenarios entirely, and force them to happen to Mary. Conversations that happened to or around Elizabeth now happened to Mary. Those scenes were completely unneeded and happened again and again. I would have much preferred the author to create her own material there. The rest of my review will have more in depth spoilers, just as a warning. The writing of this book was well done, and I feel like Janice would fare better with a completely original work of her own. I felt like in this case she misused some of the characters from Pride and Prejudice, taking the characters we knew and loved and making them horribly unlikable. The first and second parts of the book dragged and were dull to get through as we were shown every terrible thing to have happened to Mary. I felt it was especially tedious while we rehashed the events of the original book and went over everything we already knew, with just a few additions on Mary's end. Things began to pick up again when Mary went to live with her uncle and aunt, the Gardiners, and was at its highlight when she met and got to know Mr. Hayward. Then it introduced the 'love rival' Mr. Ryder, who I thought was not likable or charming at all. His selfishness was so tiring and I disliked him so much. Having to read him interact with Mary, and the misunderstandings that came about because of him, made the story drag even more. But I also really dislike love triangles always, so if you like love triangles this might not bother you as much. When at the end all was resolved and a happy ending reached, I felt it took so so so long to get there but ended all too quickly. I would have liked to see more of the ending, see more time with Mary and Mr. Hayward together, as reading about them together was my favorite parts of the book. Also I agree with another reviewer, I felt this book would have benefiting from taking a good 100 pages out.I think Janice has a lot of potential and hope that she writes more in the future, but again I think she would do better with original works.
